The Platinum Redtail Dumbo Guppy is a dazzling variety of guppy that boasts shimmering silver body tones accented by a bold, ruby-red tail and oversized “dumbo” pectoral fins. This combination of vibrant color and dramatic finnage makes it a standout centerpiece in any community or planted aquarium. Bred in-house for resilience and quality, these guppies are excellent choices for both beginner and seasoned aquarists.

What We Love About This Fish:

• Brilliant Contrast – The shimmering platinum body paired with a vivid red tail is eye-catching and unique.
• Striking Fins – Large dumbo pectorals give them a flowing, graceful presence in the tank.
• Peaceful & Hardy – Easy to care for and suitable for a wide range of water conditions.
• Prolific Breeders – Great for hobbyists interested in expanding their colony.

Natural Habitat:

The original guppy (Poecilia reticulata) was first documented in South America, inhabiting freshwater streams, pools, and rivers rich in vegetation. The Platinum Redtail Dumbo Guppy is a selectively bred variety developed in captivity to enhance its brilliant colors and signature dumbo finnage.

Aquascaping:

Platinum Redtail Dumbo Guppies thrive in a thoughtfully designed aquascape that highlights their shimmering colors while offering comfort and security. A lush planted environment not only enhances their beauty but also encourages natural behaviors like grazing and breeding.

• Plants: Dense greenery such as Java Moss, Anubias, Hornwort, and Amazon Sword provides cover for fry, foraging areas, and resting spots. Aquatic Arts offers a wide range of potted plants and moss assortments, making it easy to create a vibrant underwater garden that complements your guppies.

• Hardscape: Incorporating driftwood, smooth river stones, and slate gives structure to the tank and creates gentle contrasts against the guppies’ platinum and red tones. Hardscape also breaks up sightlines, which helps maintain harmony in community tanks.

• Botanicals: Adding natural botanicals enriches the environment by softening the water and releasing beneficial tannins, while also encouraging biofilm growth that guppies and shrimp love to graze on. Our Aquatic Arts Botanical Combo Pack provides a curated selection of botanicals — such as Indian Almond Leaves and alder cones — that promote both beauty and health in your aquarium.

Diet and Feeding:

This omnivorous guppy thrives on a varied diet. Offer high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and occasional treats of frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. A balanced diet ensures vibrant coloration and robust health. We use and recommend Ultra Fresh Guppy Mignon and Ultra Fresh Apex Guppy diets.

Tank Mates and Compatibility:

Platinum Redtail Dumbo Guppies are peaceful and thrive in community setups. Ideal tank mates include rasboras, tetras, corydoras, and other livebearers. Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping species such as large barbs or cichlids.

Shrimp Safe:

Generally safe with adult shrimp, though tiny shrimp fry may be consumed. Provide ample plant cover if housing with shrimp colonies.

Breeding:

Like all guppies, this variety is a livebearer and breeds readily in captivity. Females give birth to free-swimming fry. A breeding box or dense plant growth will help protect fry from predation.
